Note: These undated works are now shown on alphabetical, rather than chronological order. I suspect the majority of these are late works, and in my opinion, not very good examples of Renoir's works:

Kay Nielsen – part 3

Kay Rasmus Nielsen (1886 – 1957) was a Danish illustrator who was popular in the early 20th century, during the “golden age of illustration.” He joined the ranks of Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac in enjoying the success of the Gift Books of the early 20th century. Nielsen is also known for his collaborations with Disney for whom he contributed many sketches and illustrations.

See part 1 - Introduction for full biographical notes on Kay Nielsen. See part 2 also for earlier works.

This is part 3 of a 6–part post on the works of Kay Nielsen:

1914 East of the Sun and West of the Moon:

1914 saw the publication of another children’s collection, “East of the Sun and West of the Moon,” for which Nielsen provided 25 colour plates and more than 21 monotone images. The colour images for both “Powder and Crinoline” and “East of the Sun and West of the Moon” were reproduced by a new 4-colour process, in contrast to many illustrations by his contemporaries that characteristically utilised a traditional 3-colour process.

1917 Arabian Nights:

Around and up to 1917  Kay Nielsen worked on an extensive suite of illustrations intended to accompany a translation of Scheherazade’s “Arabian Nights” that had been undertaken by the Arabic scholar, Professor Arthur Christensen. According to Nielsen’s own published comments, these illustrations were to be the basis of his return to book illustration following a hiatus during World War I, and the intention had been to publish the Danish version in parallel with versions for the English-speaking world and the French market. The project never came to fruition and Nielsen’s illustrations remained unknown until many years after his death.

1924 Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen:

Following his theatrical work in Copenhagen, Nielsen returned to contributing to illustrated books with the publication of “Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen” in 1924. This included 12 colour plates and more than 40 monotone illustrations. The colour images were prepared with integral formal and informal borders; the informal borders were produced in a mille-fleur style.

1940 Fantasia:

In 1939 Nielsen left for California and worked for Hollywood companies. A personal recommendation from Joe Grant to Walt Disney secured Nielsen a job with The Walt Disney Company, where his work was used on “Fantasia” in the “Ave Maria” and “Night on the Bald Mountain” sequences.

1939-40s The Little Mermaid:

Nielsen was renowned at the Disney studio for his concept art and he contributed artwork for many Disney films, including concept paintings for a proposed adaptation of fellow Dane, Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.” The film however was not made within Nielsen’s lifetime and his work went unused. The film finally went into production in 1989.

Nielsen briefly returned to Denmark in desperation. However, he found his works no longer in demand there either. His final years were spent in poverty. His last works fro schools and churches, including “The First Spring” mural installed at Central Junior High School, Los Angeles, and a painting illustrating the 23rd Psalm at the Wong Chapel, First Congregational Church, Los Angeles.

He died in 1957 aged 71 and his funeral service was held at the Wong Chapel. His wife Ulla died the following year.

Henri Fantin-Latour - part 1

Henri Fantin-Latour (1836 – 1904) was born Ignace Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour in Grenoble, France in 1836. A painter and lithographer, he is best known for his flower paintings, but he produced many other kinds of work, including several group portraits that are important historical documents and show his friendship with leading avant-garde artists and writers. Homage to Delacroix (1864) shows Fantin-Latour himself, with Baudelaire, Manet, Whistler and others grouped around a portrait of Delacroix. A Studio in Batignolles (1870) shows Monet, Renoir and others in Manet’s studio.
In spite of his association with such progressive artists, Fantin-Latour was essentially a traditionalist. Much of his later career was devoted to lithography; he greatly admired Richard Wagner and did imaginative lithographs illustrating his music and that of other composers. His wife Victoria Dubourg (1840-1926) was also a painter, mainly of flower pieces.

As a youth Fantin-Latour had received drawing lessons from his father, who was an artist. In 1850 he entered the Ecole de Dessin in Paris, where he spent much time studying and copying old masters.

Whistler brought attention to Fantin-Latour in England, where his still-lifes sold so well that they were practically unknown in France during his lifetime. He married Victoria Dubourg in 1875, after which he spent his summers on the country estate of her family at Buré, Orne, in lower Normandy, where he died in August 1904.

1864 Homage to Delacroix:

This painting is the first in a series that Fantin-Latour painted of friends, which, along with his flower paintings were to bring him fame. It was painted a year after the death of Eugène Delacroix, who appears as a portrait in the centre of the painting, honoured by a bouquet of flowers placed in front of it. Fantin-Latour painted the portrait from a photograph that had been published ten years previously.

The ten painters and critics who have gathered to pay their respects to Delacroix are, from left to right: Louis Cordier, the critic Edmond Duranty, Alphonse Legros, Fantin-Latour himself (the only figure in shirt-sleeves, holding  a palette). Whistler, Champfleury, Edouard Manet, Félix Braquemond, the poet Charles Baudelaire, and Albert deBalleroy.

A Studio at Batignolles:

Les Batignolles was a district of Paris where Manet and many of the future Impressionists lived. Fantin-Latour, a quiet observer of this period, has gathered around Manet (presented as the leader of the school), a number of young artists with innovative ideas.

From left to right: Otto Schölderer, (a German painter who had come to France to get to know Courbet’s followers), Manet sitting at his easel, Auguste Renoir, Zacharie Astruc, a sculptor and journalist, Emile Zola (the spokesman of the new style of painting), Edmond Maître (a civil servant at the town hall), Frédéric Bazille (who was killed a few months later during the 1870 war, at the age of 26), and Claude Monet.

This is part 4 of a 13-part series on the works of Henri Fantin-Latour. For biographical notes see part 1. For earlier works see parts 1-3 also.

1872 By the Table

This group picture brought together several writers, namely Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud Elzéar Bonnier, Léon Valade, Émile Blémont, Jean Aicard, Ernst d’Hervilly, and Camille Pelletan. Originally Fantin-Latour was planning a companion piece to his Homage to Delacroix, which was to feature Baudelaire, the influential writer, at its centre. This plan gradually receded in favour of a rather informal grouping of literary figures around a table.

This late group portrait became famous because of its authentic portrayal of Verlaine and Rimbaud, who are sitting on the left-hand side of the table in the foreground.

Henri Fantin-Latour - part 8

0
0
Henri Fantin-Latour (1836 – 1904) was born Ignace Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour in Grenoble, France in 1836. A painter and lithographer, he is best known for his flower paintings, but he produced many other kinds of work, including several group portraits that are important historical documents and show his friendship with leading avant-garde artists and writers.

This is part 8 of a 13-part series on the works of Henri Fantin-Latour. For biographical notes see part 1. For earlier works see parts 1-7 also.

1895 The Muse

This lithograph is one of a number Fantin-Latour made on the theme of artistic inspiration and the muse. He created portraits of famous composers, including Wagner and Berlioz, showing them in the act of ‘Composing.’ They were often accompanied by a female muse. Here the composer gazes up at his muse who hold a palm frond, a traditional symbol of triumph. On the table there is an antique torch representing the light of knowledge and understanding. His pen is also a symbol of knowledge and creation, as well as having traditional associations with strength.
