Camille Pissarro part - 10

1898c Self-Portrait
oil on canvas 53 x 30.5 cm
Dallas Museum of Art, Texas

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies (now the US Virgin Islands). His importance resides in his contributions to the Impressionist movements. He studied from great forerunners including Gustave Courbet and Camille Corot. He later studied and worked alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac when he took on the Neo-Impressionist style at the age of 54.

Pissarro is the only artist to have shown in all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. He acted as a father-figure, not only to the Impressionists, but to all four of the major Post-Impressionists, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.

I hope the story of Pissarro’s life and work is of interest because it is a major series running for a while yet. Though I haven’t included absolutely every piece of Pissarro’s work, I am featuring well over a thousand examples, the better to understand his legacy.

This is part 10 of a major 21-part series on the works of Camille Pissarro. For a fuller biography see part 1, and for earlier works, see Parts 1 to 9 also.

In 1896 Pissarro made his third working trip to the city of Rouen. Largely ignoring the historic medieval quarter, he was more interested in showing the frenetic activity of the river port.
Constantly changing weather meant working on several paintings at once - he wrote: "I have fog, mist, rain, sunset and grey effects. I need a few good sessions for two sunsets, two fogs, a sunlight and a grey morning. Will I get them by the end of March?"

Camille Pissarro and his family at Éragny in 1895

Though I haven’t included absolutely every piece of Pissarro’s work, I am featuring well over a thousand examples, the better to understand his legacy.

This is part 19 of a 21-part series on the works of Camille Pissarro. For a fuller biography see part 1, and for earlier works, see Parts 1 to 18 also.

Cats in Art - part 1

$

They say you’re either a ‘dog person’ or a ‘cat person.’ I’ve always fallen into the latter category, so I thought I would do a themed feature for this series of posts, covering a large time span through art history.

Leonardo da Vinci wrote “The smallest feline is a masterpiece.” His admiration for the feline form is evident in his Study of Cat Movements and Positions:

Leonardo da Vinci
Study of Cat Movements and Positions 1517-18

Thomas Gainsborough’s and Paul Gauguin’s cat studies show a similar admiration of the feline form:

Thomas Gainsborough 1727-1788
Six Studies of a Cat
black and white chalk on brown paper 33.2 x 45.9 cm

Paul Gauguin 1848-1903
Etude des chats

Cats were a particularly popular accessory as the cuddly familiars of females in sentimental Victorian paintings, and for the French Impressionists. The cat featured in Renoir’s painting of Julie Manet is perhaps the most contented cat in art history. The painting will feature in part 6 of this series.

Pierre Auguste Renoir 1841-1919
Julie Manet 1887

One famous ‘cat artist’ I have omitted from this series is Louis Wain – he was more of a children’s book illustrator than a fine artist. His story is quite interesting though, and I will be featuring him in a large series at a later date.

I couldn’t quite work a logical sequence to the works as they are not all dated, so the works are listed in sequences either by the dates of the artist, or by the works where dated. Where I have images of the artist, they appear above the relevant artwork or artworks.

Continuing a look at art that has featured cats in one way or another, either as the subject of the work, or as an adjunct to it.

They say you’re either a ‘dog person’ or a ‘cat person.’ I’ve always fallen into the latter category, so I thought I would do a themed feature for this series of posts, covering a large time span through art history.

The time span of approximately five-hundred artworks in the series (in roughly chronological order) is close to five hundred years - from 1525 (Francesco d’Ubertino Verdito) to 1999 (Louise Bourgeois).

This is part 2 of a 9-part series on Cats in Art. For earlier works see part 1 also. Note: I have added portraits and dates of the artists where I was able to find them.

This is part 6 of a 9-part series on Cats in Art. For earlier works see parts 1 - 5 also. Note: I have added portraits and dates of the artists where I was able to find them.
