This is the third part in an occasional series on film (or movie) posters. I have previously featured "Film Posters 1913-1929" and "Film Posters 1930s" (see index).

From the 1910s through to the 1940s film studios developed their own artwork styles for their movie posters and used well-known artists and illustrators. Even when the films were black and white, the studios recognised the attraction of colour in the publicity.

Originally the posters were produced for the exclusive use by the theatres exhibiting the film the poster was created for, and the copies of the posters were required to be returned to the distributor after the film left the theatre. Very few posters from this period survive because the paper was recycled during the depression years and WW2.

Film-noir was very much the vogue during the 1940s as is evidenced in these posts. This is part 1 of a 3-part post on film posters of the 1940s.

Albrecht Dürer - part 1

1484 Self-Portrait at the age of 13 silverpoint on paper 27.5 x 19.6 cm Albertina, Vienna
Albrecht Dürer (1471-1578) was a German painter, engraver, printmaker, mathematician and theorist. Born in Nuremberg in 1471, Duurer was apprenticed to his father, a goldsmith, and to Michael Wolgemut, whose workshop produced woodcut illustrations for publications. Dürer revolutionised printmaking, elevating it to an independent art form. His high quality woodcuts established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he is regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance. His vast body of works include altarpieces and other religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings.

By the age of thirty Dürer had completed or begun three of his most famous series of woodcuts on religious subjects: The Large Passion cycle (c1497-1500), The Apocalypse (1497-98), The Life of the Virgin (1500-11).

Dürer visited Italy twice - from 1494 to 1495, and again from 1505 to 1507, seeing first-hand some of the great works of the Italian Renaissance, as well as the classical heritage and theoretical writings of the region. The influence of Venetian colour and design can be seen in the 1506 altarpiece Feast of Rose Garlands, commissioned from Dürer by a German colony of merchants living in Venice.

1506 Feast of the Rose Garlands oil on polar panel 162 x 194.5 cm Národní Galerie, Prague

Dürer developed an interest in the human form, demonstrated by his antique and nude studies. He wrote Four Books of Human Proportion, only the first of which was published in his lifetime. His talent, ambition and wide-ranging intellect earned him the attention and friendship of some of the most prominent figures in German society. He became official court artist to Holy Roman Emperors Maximilian I and his successor Charles V, for whom he designed and helped execute a range of artistic projects.

1521 Medal of Charles V designed by Albrecht Dürer, silver
Dürer exerted a huge influence on the artists of succeeding generations, especially in printmaking, the medium through which his contemporaries mostly experienced his art, as his paintings were predominately held in private collections. His success in spreading his reputation across Europe through his prints was undoubtedly an inspiration for major artists such as Raphael, Titian, and Parmigianino, all of whom collaborated with printmakers to promote and distribute their work. Dürer died in 1528.

1507-09 Heller Altar:

The Heller Altar is an oil on panel triptych by Albrecht Dürer and Matthias Grünewald. Dürer painted the central panel, and Grünewald the outer panels. It was commissioned by Frankfurt merchant Jakob Heller for the Dominican church of the city. In 1615 the central panel was sold to Maximilian I of Bavaria and a copy was ordered to replace the original in its location at the church's high altar. The central panel was destroyed by a fire in Munich in 1729.
The famous drawing of two praying hands by Dürer is a study for one of the apostles in the central panel.

Birmingham, Alabama. Curt Teich & Co. 1937
These souvenir postcards were hugely popular in in the 1940s and 1950s in America. Companies like Curt Teich and Co. made cards representing every state and almost all the towns and cities (more than 10,000) in the country.

Curt Teich (1877-1974) was a printer who emigrated from Lobenstein, Germany in 1896. Curt Teich and Co. opened in January 1898 in Chicago, Illinois, and closed in 1978. It was the world’s largest printer of view and advertising postcards. Best known for its “Greetings from” series of postcards with big letters, vivid colours, and bold graphic style.

The Curt Teich Postcard Archives, part of the Lake County Discovery Museum at Wauconda, Illinois, is recognised throughout the world as the largest public collection of postcards and related materials.

Another interesting aspect of these Large Letter postcards is that they also were produced during World War Two designed to be sent from military establishments all over the USA. I will feature these at the end of the series in part 6.

I have collected a digital archive of around 2000 Large Letter postcards, but won't be showing all those here. Instead I have chosen interesting examples from across the range of designs and locations represented.

This final selection is quite interesting in as much they were produced mainly during WW2 as greeting cards to be sent from military training camps and bases from all over the U.S.A., not something we would have done in the UK, literally advertising all the potential bombing targets.
