Eduardo Paolozzi and Freda Elliot with Eduardo's mother on their wedding day

Of Italian descent, Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005) was born in Leith near Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied in Edinburgh and London and spent two years in Paris from 1947, where he produced enigmatic, bronze sculptures reminiscent of those by Giacometti. During the same period he made a series of dada and surrealist-inspired collages in which magazine advertisements, cartoons and machine parts are combined, thus anticipating the concerns of Pop Art. Alongside teaching at various art schools he developed his printmaking and sculpture. Paolozzi was particularly interested in the mass media and in science and technology.

For full biographical notes see part 1. For earlier works, see parts 1 -3 also.

This is part 4 of a 7-part series on the works of Eduardo Paolozzi:

1970 The Conditional Probability Machine
A Portfolio of 25 etchings, printed and published by Editions Alecto, London.
This portfolio was the first for which Paolozzi used photogravure. The source material, drawn from his own stocks of magazines and science journals, was photographed and transferred to etching plates. The set is divided into four sections of six prints each: ‘Secrets of Life - The Human Machine and How it Works’, ‘Manikins for Destruction’, ‘Pages from the Aerospace Medical Library’, and ‘From Genot to Unimate’. The first section (titled from a book Paolozzi was given in Paris in 1948) deals with the human body and methods of explaining its functions. ‘Manikins for Destruction’ deals with traffic accident simulations, and ‘Pages from the Aerospace Medical Library’ with aerospace experiments. The last section presents robots, real or as toys and humanoid or purely mechanical.
