Early in 1884, Claude Monet travelled to Bordighera, a town on the Italian Riviera, close to the border between Italy and France, for a working visit of three weeks that turned into nearly three months. In a letter to the sculptor Auguste Rodin describing his efforts to translate into paint the brilliant Mediterranean light, Monet declared he was "fencing, wrestling, with the sun." In other letters, he complained of the impossibility of finding a motif due to the abundant vegetation.

Rouen Cathedral 1892 -94

The Rouen Cathedral paintings, more than thirty in all, were made in 1892 and 1893, then reworked in Monet’s studio in 1894. Monet rented spaces across the street from the cathedral, where he set up temporary studios for the purpose. In 1895, he selected what he considered to be the twenty best paintings from the series for display at his Paris dealer’s gallery, and of these he sold eight before the exhibition was over. Pissarro and Cézanne visited the exhibition and praised the series highly.

Historically, the series was well-timed. In the early 1890s, France was seeing a revival of interest in Catholicism and the subject was well received. Apart from its religious significance, Rouen Cathedral–built in the Gothic style–represented all that was best in French history and culture, being a style of architecture that was admired and adopted by many European countries during the Middle Ages.

When Monet painted the Rouen Cathedral series, he had long since been impressed with the way light imparts to a subject a distinctly different character at different times of the day and the year, and as atmospheric conditions change. For Monet, the effects of light on a subject became as important as the subject itself. His Series Paintings, in which he painted many views of the same subject under different lighting conditions, are an attempt to illustrate the importance of light in our perception of a subject at a given time and place.

Sandvika, Norway 1895

Monet visited Sandvika in Norway in early 1895. During his stay he painted several vies of the town and the surrounding landscape, with the mountain Ridge Kolsas featuring in many of the paintings, either in the background or as the primary subject. Perhaps the best known of the paintings is “Sandviken Village in Snow” which features the Løkke bridge in the foreground and Kolsas in the background. The bridge still stands in Sandvika today.

Morning on the Seine 1896-97

Begun in 1896, Monet's "Morning on the Seine" series was not completed until 1897 due to bad weather. Having sought out views along the river, Monet then executed the paintings from his studio boat. For an extended period he rose at dawn in order to catch the changing effects of the light as the sun rose. Later he lined up the paintings on easels in his studio to complete them as a series. Fifteen of the works were exhibited at Galerie Georges Petit in 1898.

Claude Monet - part 23 1897 - 1922 Water Lilies

Claude Monet 1910-26c
Claude Monet (1840 – 1926) was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting.

For full biographical notes on Claude Monet see Part 1 - Introduction. For earlier works see parts 2 - 22 also. Note: Dates, sizes, and locations of works are as best as I found them. Apologies for any inaccuracies.

Water Lilies 1897 - 1922 (Part 1)

Water Lilies (or Nymphéas) is a series of approximately 250 works by Monet. The paintings depict the flower garden and water lily pond at Giverny, and were the main focus of his artistic output during the last thirty years of his life. Many of the works were painted while Monet suffered cataracts on his eyes. During the 1920s the French State built a pair of oval rooms at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, as a permanent home to eight water lily murals. Sixty water lily paintings were assembled from around the world for a special exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in 1999.

In 2007 one of Monet’s water lily paintings sold for £18.5 million at a Sotheby’s auction in London. In 2008 another water lily painting sold for almost £41 million at Christie’s in London, almost double the pre-auction estimate of £18 - £24 million.

Stenberg brothers posters - part 1

The Stenberg brothers (Vladimir 1899 - 19882 and Georgii 1900 - 1933) were both born in Moscow of a Swedish father and Russian mother, but remained Swedish citizens until 1933. They first studied engineering, then attended the Stroganov School of Applied Arts in Moscow between 1912 - 1917, and subsequently the Moscow Svomas (free studios), where they and other students designed decorations for the first Mayday celebration in 1918.

In 1919, the Stenbergs and comrades founded the OBMOKhU (Society of Young Artists) and participated in its first group exhibition in Moscow in May 1919 and the exhibitions of 1920, 1921 and 1923. The brothers and Konstantin Medunetskii staged their own "Constructivists" exhibition in January 1922 at the Poet's Café, Moscow, accompanied by a Constructivist manifesto. Also that year, Vladimir showed his work in the landmark Erst Russiche Kunstausstellung (First Russian Art Exhibition) held in Berlin.

During the 1920s and 30s they were well established as members of the avant-garde in Moscow, and of Moscow's INKhUK (Institute of Artistic Culture). The Stenbergs practiced in a range of media, initially active as Constructivist sculptors, subsequently as theatre designers, architects, and draughtsmen. Their design work covered evrything from clothing, including women's shoes, to railway carriages. Some examples of their sculpture were spidery and spindly structures, such as the reconstruction (1973-74) of KPS 11: Construction of a Spatial Apparatus no. 11 (1919-20) in steel, glass, paint and plaster on wood, now in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.

KPS XIII, 1919-78, steel and wood on pedestal
However, the arenas in which they excelled were theatre costume and graphic design, particularly the graphic design of film posters, encouraged by the surging in movies in Russia and the government's sanctioning of graphic design and the cinema.

The brothers were at their prime during the revolutionary period of politics and artistic experimentation in Russia, centred in Moscow. In the visual language of the constructor of Constructivist, the Stenbergs and other designers and artists made assemblages.

The innovative visual aspects of the Stenberg posters included a distortion of perspective, elements from Dada photo-montage, and an exaggerated scale, a sense of movement, and a dynamic use of colour and typography - eventually all were to be imitated by others. The Stenberg artwork was frequently based on stills from the films. Radical even today, the posters by the brothers working together were realised within a nine-year period from 1924 to 1933, the year Geogii died at age 33 in a motorcycle accident. Vladimir continued to work on film posters and organised the decorations of Moscow's Red Square for the Mayday celebrations of 1947.

Edmund Dulac - part 1

Edmund Dulac (born Edmond Dulac 1882 – 1953) was a French magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer. Born in Toulouse, France, he began his career by studying law at the University of Toulouse. He also studied art, switching to it full-time after he became bored with law, and having won prizes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He spent a very brief period at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1904 before moving to London.

He was commissioned by the publisher J.M. Dent to illustrate Jane Eyre.  He then began an association with the Leicester Gallery and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery commissioned paintings from Dulac which they sold; the rights to the paintings were purchased by Hodder & Stoughton, who used them as illustrations in illustrated books, publishing one book a year. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from The Arabian Nights(1907) with 50 colour images; an edition of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest (1908) with 40 colour illustrations; The Rubàiyàt of Omar Khayyam (1909) with 20 colour images; The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (1910); Stories from Hans Andersen (1911); The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe (1912) with 28 colour images and many monotone illustrations; and Princess Badoura (1913).

Dulac became a naturalised British Citizen in 1912.

During World War I he contributed to war relief books, including King Albert’s Book (1914), Princess Mary’s Gift Book, and, unusually, his own Edmund Dulac's Picture-Book for the French Red Cross(1915) including 20 colour images. Hodder and Stoughton also published The Dreamer of Dreams (1915) including 6 colour images - a work composed by the then Queen of Romania.

Illustration "True Spartan Hearts" for Princess Mary's Gift Book

After the war, the deluxe edition illustrated book became a rarity and Dulac's career in this field was over. His last such books were Edmund Dulac's Fairy Book (1916), the Tanglewood Tales(1918) (including 14 colour images) and the The Kingdom of the Pearl(1920). His career continued in other areas however, including newspaper caricatures (especially at The Outlook), portraiture, theatre costume and set design, bookplates, chocolate boxes, medals, and various graphics (especially for The Mercury Theatre, Notting Hill Gate).

Costume design for the character of Momus in the opera "Phebus and Pan"
He also produced illustrations for The American Weekly, a Sunday supplement belonging to the Hearst newspaper chain in America and Britain's Country Life. Country Life Limited (London) published Gods and Mortals in Love (1935) (including 9 colour images) based on a number of the contributions made by Dulac to Country Lifepreviously. The Daughter of the Stars (1939) was a further publication to benefit from Dulac's artwork - due to constraints related to the outbreak of World War II, that title included just 2 colour images. He continued to produce books for the rest of his life, more so than any of his contemporaries, although these were less frequent and less lavish than during the Golden Age.
Halfway through his final book commission (Milton's Comus) Dulac died of a heart attack on 25 May 1953 in London.

Title Page

Their chief in a low but distinct voice uttered the two words, "Open Sesame"

This way and that she led him blindfold

Pirouezè, the fairest and most honourably born

The lady advanced to meet him

A city among the Idles named Deryabar

The Princess Deryabar

At so arrogant a claim all the courtiers burst into loud laughter

Till the tale of her mirror contented her

She gave orders for the banquet to be served

So strange of form and so brilliant and diverse in hue

The damsel upset the pan

Supposing me asleep, they began to talk

Great was the astonishment of the vizier

Maidens on a white horse

The fisherman and the genie

The magic horse

The ship struck a rock

All this time the Princess had been watching the combat from the roof of the palace

As soon as he came in she began to jeer at him

Having transformed himself by disguise

He arrived within sight of a palace of shining marble

Then for the last figure of all she drew out the dagger

The Queen of the Ebony Isles
