Early in 1884, Claude Monet travelled to Bordighera, a town on the Italian Riviera, close to the border between Italy and France, for a working visit of three weeks that turned into nearly three months. In a letter to the sculptor Auguste Rodin describing his efforts to translate into paint the brilliant Mediterranean light, Monet declared he was "fencing, wrestling, with the sun." In other letters, he complained of the impossibility of finding a motif due to the abundant vegetation.

Rouen Cathedral 1892 -94

The Rouen Cathedral paintings, more than thirty in all, were made in 1892 and 1893, then reworked in Monet’s studio in 1894. Monet rented spaces across the street from the cathedral, where he set up temporary studios for the purpose. In 1895, he selected what he considered to be the twenty best paintings from the series for display at his Paris dealer’s gallery, and of these he sold eight before the exhibition was over. Pissarro and Cézanne visited the exhibition and praised the series highly.

Historically, the series was well-timed. In the early 1890s, France was seeing a revival of interest in Catholicism and the subject was well received. Apart from its religious significance, Rouen Cathedral–built in the Gothic style–represented all that was best in French history and culture, being a style of architecture that was admired and adopted by many European countries during the Middle Ages.

When Monet painted the Rouen Cathedral series, he had long since been impressed with the way light imparts to a subject a distinctly different character at different times of the day and the year, and as atmospheric conditions change. For Monet, the effects of light on a subject became as important as the subject itself. His Series Paintings, in which he painted many views of the same subject under different lighting conditions, are an attempt to illustrate the importance of light in our perception of a subject at a given time and place.

Sandvika, Norway 1895

Monet visited Sandvika in Norway in early 1895. During his stay he painted several vies of the town and the surrounding landscape, with the mountain Ridge Kolsas featuring in many of the paintings, either in the background or as the primary subject. Perhaps the best known of the paintings is “Sandviken Village in Snow” which features the Løkke bridge in the foreground and Kolsas in the background. The bridge still stands in Sandvika today.

Morning on the Seine 1896-97

Begun in 1896, Monet's "Morning on the Seine" series was not completed until 1897 due to bad weather. Having sought out views along the river, Monet then executed the paintings from his studio boat. For an extended period he rose at dawn in order to catch the changing effects of the light as the sun rose. Later he lined up the paintings on easels in his studio to complete them as a series. Fifteen of the works were exhibited at Galerie Georges Petit in 1898.

Claude Monet 1910-26c
Claude Monet (1840 – 1926) was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting.

For full biographical notes on Claude Monet see Part 1 - Introduction. For earlier works see parts 2 - 22 also. Note: Dates, sizes, and locations of works are as best as I found them. Apologies for any inaccuracies.

Water Lilies 1897 - 1922 (Part 1)

Water Lilies (or Nymphéas) is a series of approximately 250 works by Monet. The paintings depict the flower garden and water lily pond at Giverny, and were the main focus of his artistic output during the last thirty years of his life. Many of the works were painted while Monet suffered cataracts on his eyes. During the 1920s the French State built a pair of oval rooms at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, as a permanent home to eight water lily murals. Sixty water lily paintings were assembled from around the world for a special exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in 1999.

In 2007 one of Monet’s water lily paintings sold for £18.5 million at a Sotheby’s auction in London. In 2008 another water lily painting sold for almost £41 million at Christie’s in London, almost double the pre-auction estimate of £18 - £24 million.

During the years between 1899 and 1905, Monet travelled to London to capture its sights from the fifth-floor balcony of the Savoy Hotel. He was captivated by the London fog, a notable atmospheric effect made markedly worse by the heavy pollution of industry. He painted the Houses of Parliament, Waterloo Bridge, and Charing Cross Bridge over and again, as he had earlier done with haystacks and Rouen Cathedral, dashing off paintings to capture fleeting atmospheric effects. He was extremely prolific, beginning nearly 100 paintings in London.Thirty-seven of the canvases were of Charing Cross Bridge, only twelve of which he finished in London; the rest he took back to his Giverny studio for completion.

1900 - 1905 The Houses of Parliament

Monet undertook a series of paintings of the Palace of Westminster, home of the British Parliament, during his stays in London between the years 1900-1905. The paintings have all the same size and viewpoint, Monet's window at St Thomas’ Hospital overlooking the river Thames. They are however painted at different times of the day and at different weather circumstances.

By now he had abandoned his earlier working practice of completing a painting on the spot in front of the motif. He carried on refining the images back in France, and sent to London for photographs to help in this. This caused some adverse reaction, but Monet's reply was that his means of creating a work was his own business, and it was up to the viewer to judge the final result.

Claude Monet 1910-26c
So we reach the final part of this epic series on Monet. It could have been shorter if I had added more images to each post, but I felt that an average of around 60 images in each post was probably enough to absorb. Do let me know if if you feel differently - there will be one or two more big series in the future - I am researching Paul Cezanne at the moment. I lost one follower during the course of this series, but gained others, so thank you to those who have taken a look.

Oddly enough, after researching all these paintings, we finally come to my personal favourites. An unfortunate combination of cataracts on his eyes, old age, liberated brushstrokes and strong colour edge these final works towards modern abstraction.

I recently met up with London-based artist Sam Peacock, (born 1976. originally from Rugby and educated at Coventry University. "Escaped the West Midlands in 2004 to pursue a career in London") to view his one-man exhibition at Curious Duke Gallery in London. Sam’s paintings, whilst being minimalist abstracted landscapes, are a refreshing shift away from any convention. Working on steel plates he creates horizons across the “canvas”, based on experiences from his travels around the globe, particularly in Australia and Thailand. I think the pieces are terrific.

Employing a mix of conventional and unconventional organic materials like liquorice, demerera sugar, and carbolic soap he creates surprising subtle effects and delicate colours. He sometimes uses burning to good effect as well (the only pieces that reminded of the “Combustione” works of Italian artist Alberto Burri, but this was totally incidental) creating hot and harsh “burnt” landscapes that refer to the Australian Outback.  He often scrapes back layers of paint to reveal the blur the horizons that define his work. He references these works in series called Orescrape,Colourscrape, and Remescrape.

Peacock explains that “I gorge on the speed and power of mark-making, the rawness and the ferocity of paint; how brush marks shift, scrape and overlap to build up structures and forms which compel me to paint, I look incisively for the conversation within the form to build this up on the surface as the work evolves.”

Dubbo (from the Australian series)

Sam Peacock: “Dubbo is a desolate town where buildings and architecture are characterised by those who occupy them. It’s a jail town with hard as nails pubs, the earth is red and scorched and wildlife lethal. The town’s attractions presented in all forms help form this series of work. In age and eccentricity comes a force of colour. Heat is used at varying points to cause as much distress as possible.”

Katoomba

“Home of the 3 sisters, hence this is a triptych. The red being inspired by patches of fauna growing on the rocks and the mineral content escaping into the bush trails there; a vast space of undiscovered land. Burned out areas appear frequently in this space of intense beauty. The raw surfaces in the works combine organic materials matched with intense heats.”

Kurringai

“The inspiration for this series comes from looking at where early pioneers had blasted huge rock formations out of the earth and used steel drilling equipment to carve out a freeway to link Sydney to Newcastle on the Central Coast Road, Memories were of hanging out the car window taking photos on my iphone looking for earth colours mixed with human interactions in the form of drill lines.”

Blaxland

“Blaxland, like most of Australia has a bushfire indicator, I spent time wandering through Blaxland national park with my Brother in Law who is knowledgeable on the Australian outback. We looked at some bushfire damage to trees and the land, an array of charred wood, iron ore and in the rainy season, mudslides. My Australian family is from here and it’s a place close to my heart. There are areas of light and dark in most artist’s rites of passage, this is possibly mine.”

Ettalong

"A place close to my heart, because it's where I go fishing. Natural beauty occurs in all areas. Its inhabitants are all weathered by the local environment, as is everything else. I swam out to a pier here, which was broken and taken by the sea, to fish off. The piece of work is a signature piece and incorporates oils, varnishes, and organic materials."

Mudgee

"This series is based on a visit to rural New South Wales in 2010. It's known for it's mining industries of old. Looking at some of the shapes and spaces, along with the colours there, which were raw and sun-bleached. The work is based on steel and includes oils and varnishes alongside coffee and masking tape."

"The rock formations here are awe-inspiring, the sea is a force of nature and the heat oversees life here like a giant pagan god. Australia and it's vast resources are here for all to see. The bleached colours are everywhere and the stone is hot to touch. Every now and again, a seal will appear on the beach, having been chased by a Great White. Oils, varnishes and organic materials scatter the surfaces."

Ironsea

The Ironsea series represents a long-awaited ambition to look at Britain's trade links and its underbelly of routes and lines that draw towards a capital. Britain's coastal ports and its links to the new worlds are studied. Decay creeps in alongside a heritage of Industry. The sugar trade is examined in the materials seen and our relationship with the world is discussed alongside the overwhelming power of the oceans."

Monet at Giverny, between 1899 and 1909. Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

For earlier works see parts 2 - 6 also. Note: Dates, sizes, and locations of works are as best as I found them. Apologies for any inaccuracies.
