1959-61 The Twelve Tribes
Stained Glass Window designs:

In 1959, Dr. Mariam Freund (National President of the Hadassah) and Joseph Neufeld (architect who designed the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center) commissioned Marc Chagall to design the stained-glass windows for the synagogue that was to be part of the medical center. Each of the twelve windows would represent one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Chagall worked on the project for two years, with the windows ultimately exhibited in Paris in June of 1961 and at the Museum of Modern Art New York in the winter of 1961. In February 1962, they were permanently installed in the synagogue. Chagall created the lithographic series The Twelve Maquettes for the Stained Glass Windows for Jerusalem after the image of these original stained glass windows.

The twelve tribes of Israel represent the twelve kin groups of ancient Israel, who are each traditionally descended from one of the twelve sons of Jacob: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. Upon Jacob’s death, the territory of Israel was divided amongst his twelve sons, designating the twelve tribes of Israel.

1960-68 The Chagall State Hall, The Knesset,
Jerusalem:

The Chagall state hall is used for state receptions. The hall was designed and decorated by the Jewish artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985). Chagall designed for the hall 12 floor mosaics, one wall mosaic and three Gobelin tapestries.

Speaker of the Knesset Kadish Luz called on March Chagall in 1960 and requested that he provide the artwork the future permanent Knesset building. It was first discussed that he create murals or works of stained glass, as he had created for the synagogue at the Hadassah Hospital. Chagall, however, wished to attempt to create tapestries. Kadish Luz provided him with passages from the Bible, and Chagall worked them into his drawings. In December 1963 he suggested to make the Gobelins as a triptych – three paintings of the same theme, hanging side-by-side and comprising a whole.

Chagall made the original paintings the same size of the future tapestries. The painting for the right tapestry was completed at the end of 1963, since he had made a similar painting – in different colors – for a stained glass window he made for the United Nations building in memory of the late Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld.

The paintings for the centre and left tapestries were completed in the summer of 1964. It was then that the weaving of the tapestries began, at the “Atelier de la Manufacture des Gobelins” workshop in Paris. Prior to the work on the tapestries themselves, the workshop attempted weaving portions of the carpets for a year and selected 144 colours and shades to be used in their making. The weaving began in 1965 and continued until early 1968.

The side tapestries are 4.8 meters high and 5.5. meters wide, and the centre is 4.8 meters high and 9.5 meters wide. Each tapestry was signed by the company and shows the signature of Chagall and the date of the painting. They were hung on June 18th 1969, in the presence of the President of the State.

1961 Daphnis and Chloe Suite - 42 lithographs:

1961 Daphnis and Chloe is a pastoral elegy attributed to the Greek poet Longus, dating from the second century A.D.

Chagall had always been delighted with the tale, which analysed the simple, mutual passion of two abandoned children who are protected by nymphs and the god Pan. When it was suggested to Chagall by Tériade (1956), the famed Parisian publisher, that he illustrate the fable of Daphnis and Chloe, Chagall began his preparation for the project by making two trips to Greece. While visiting Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Nauplis and Poros, Chagall executed a number of preliminary sketches and gouaches for the series. Falling in love with Greece, its landscape, history and climate deeply influenced his choice of colour and form for the Daphnis and Chloe lithographs.

1963-64 The Paris Opera House

The nearly 2,600-square-foot canvas, which required a staggering 440 pounds of paint, was not initially well received however. When French Minister of Culture André Malraux announced the commission for the project in 1960, many were outraged by the prospect of a modernist painter - and a foreign-born one at that - taking his brush to the ceilings of Charles Garnier’s neo-Baroque masterpiece. But Chagall’s passion for the project won out.

Completed over the course of eight months in various Paris studios, the canvas commemorated contemporary and historic composers, actors, and dancers, evoking the transformative power and beauty of art through the rich colour and composition for which Chagall was known. The work quickly won over many early doubters and became a benchmark for integrating modernism into France’s historic landmarks: A year later André Masson would be commissioned to create a new ceiling for the Théâtre de l’Odéon. Chagall’s ceiling is now one of the Opéra’s most popular attractions.

1964-67 Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)
at the New York Metropolitan Opera:

In 1964, the Metropolitan Opera commissioned Marc Chagall to design the stage sets and costumes for its first production of Mozart’s acclaimed opera The Magic Flute. One of his favourite plays, Chagall embraced his designs as he tried to draw parallels between the Bible and Mozart’s opera.  To him, they both shared the fundamental principles of goodness and truth; “For me there is nothing on earth that approaches those two perfections, The Magic Flute and the Bible,” he said.

In 1967, when a new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute opened at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera, the steady pulse of the opera world was sent racing. Marc Chagall was 79-years old at that time.

Located in Chase Tower Plaza, The Four Seasons are a series of mosaics that lyrically and colourfully celebrate the arrival of spring, summer, autumn and winter. It was a gift to the City of Chicago by the Prince Charitable Trust and was dedicated in 1974. In 1994, after two decades of exposure to the elements, the mosaic panels were restored and a protective canopy was added.

Portrait of Paule Vézelay by Léon de Smet 1918

Paule Vézelay (1892–1984) was one of the pioneers of twentieth-century abstraction in Britain. She worked across a range of media, exploring common ideas and forms through painting, sculpture and textiles.
Born Marjorie Watson-Williams in Bristol, she moved to London in 1912 to study at the London School of Art under George Belcher, the Punch cartoonist, developing a humorous, illustrative early style. In 1926 she moved to Paris and adopted the name ‘Paule Vézelay’, possibly in the hope that its French-sounding origin would afford her greater opportunities as an artist. Abandoning her figurative approach she began depicting organic, biomorphic and geometric forms as well as creating relief works and sculptures.

During her time in Paris, Vézelay became part of an international network of leading avant-garde artists, including Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber- Arp, Wassily Kandinsky, Maria Helena Viera da Silva, Joan Miró and Narlow Moss. She grew particularly close to André Masson and in 1934 joined the association of non-figurative artists "Abstraction-Création."

Vézelay returned to England at the outbreak of the Second World War, where she found critics and the public less supportive of her modern style. She turned to textile design as an additional source of income but continued to work as an artist until the end of her life, and was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1983.

In 1942, quoting French poet Arthur Rimbaud, she proclaimed, "Cords have I stretched from bell-tower to bell-tower; garlands I strung from window to window; with gold have I linked one star to another, and I dance."

A highly sought after illustrator of his time, Edward Ardizzone successfully combined a fine art career with a commercial one. Alongside a very prolific career as an illustrator, working with all the major publishing houses, Ardizzone also spent time working as a war artist. His illustrative style combines simplicity and detail in a way that seems quintessentially English.

Ardizzone mainly illustrated children’s books, many of which, such as Tim All Alone (Oxford, 1956) he also wrote. He won the inaugural Kate Greenaway Prize for Tim All Alone, and went on to achieve a Commended runner up for the 1959 Greenaway Medal for his illustrations of Titus in Trouble for James Reeves.

He was born in 1900 in French Indo-China. His father, though of Italian parentage, was born in Algeria and therefore a French National. The family arrived in England in 1905. During 1919-26 Edward attended evening classes at Westminster School of Art. This was his only formal art training. In 1920 the family house was established at 130 Elgin Avenue, Maida Vale, London. Ardizzone married Catherine Anderson in 1929.

1929 also saw the publication of his first illustrated book, “In a Glass Darkly” by Sheridan Le Fanu. In 1930 his first one-man exhibition was held at the Bloomsbury Gallery. Through the 1930s Ardizzone had several one-man exhibitions and illustrated several children’s books, including the first “Little Tim” story in 1936.

Ardizzone was appointed Official War Artist in 1940 and travelled to France as a War Correspondent to record the British Expeditionary Force. Between 1942 and 45, he travelled to North Africa, Sicily and Italy, was at the Normandy Landings and also spent time in Germany. An extensive collection of his war pictures along with his wartimediaries can be found in the Imperial War Museum. National collections of paintings, manuscripts and lithographs can be seen at the Tate, London, and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

In 1953 he was commissioned to create a watercolour of the Queen’s Coronation. In 1954 he was commissioned by the Press Gallery to create a portrait of Sir Winston Churchill for presentation to him on his retirement. The artist was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1970, and appointed CBE in 1971. He died in 1979.

Edward Ardizzone is one of the most significant illustrators of the 20th century, whose wide-ranging output spanned children's books, literary classics, war illustration and much more.

Ardizzone’s lively line-and-wash drawings were based on constant observation of the world, disciplined by classical figure composition. He is best-known for his illustrated children’s books, in particular the ‘Little Tim’ series which he wrote and illustrated, starting in 1936 with Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain, all of which are still in print today.

For more biographical notes see part 1. For earlier works by Ardizzone, see parts 1 - 5 also.
