Louis Valtat (1869 – 1952) was a French painter and printmaker associated with the Fauves  ("the wild beasts," so named for their wild use of colour), who first exhibited together in 1905 at the Salon d’Automme. He is noted as a key figure in the stylistic transition in painting from Monet to Matisse.

Valtat’s early work, generally landscapes and street scenes, used the light touch of Impressionism and the coloured dots of Pointillism along with an intense, bright palette, as in Péniches (Barges) (1892).

Later in life, while suffering from tuberculosis, he spent several autumns and winters on the Mediterranean, where he intensified his use of colour and began to express more Fauvist tendencies, particularly in his seascapes. However, he never fully adopted the extreme boldness of colour and form that characterises the work of the Fauve group.

Born August 8, 1869 in Dieppe, France, Valtat studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Académie Julian. His fellow students and contemporaries included Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnar, and Édouard Vuillard, though Valtat remained separate from the Synthesist movement by which these three were influenced. He continued to paint until 1948, when he lost his sight due to glaucoma. Valtat died on January 2, 1952 in Paris.

  • 09/08/17--05:58: Leonetto Cappiello - part 1
  • 1902 Cappiello in his studio at 194 Boulevard Malesherbes, Paris

Leonetto Cappiello (1875 – 1942) was an Italian/French poster artist and painter, who mainly lived and worked in Paris. He is now often called 'the father of modern advertising' because of his innovation in poster design. The early advertising poster was characterised by a painterly quality as evidenced by early poster artists Jules Chéret,Alfred Choubrac and Hugo D'Alesi. Cappiello, like other young artists, worked in way that was almost the opposite of his predecessors. He was the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters early norm.

Cappiello’s career as a poster artist began in earnest in 1900 when he began a contract with the printerPierre Vercasson. In this period, the printers would act as an agent for artists and commission work to them. Vercasson had a print house, and his goal was to bring vibrancy and colour to the streets of Paris, he wanted the posters that he produced to stand out from the rest and attract lucrative new advertisers to his agency.

Of course living in Paris, he was aware of the current art scene, and had seen many examples of Cappiello’s work, including a small number of posters already produced and in particular those for Le Frou-Frou. He knew that Cappiello had the potential to be exactly what he was looking for. The relationship commenced with the arrangement that Vercasson would find the clients and brief Cappiello on the product. It was then up to Cappiello to produce a sketch for the client for which he would receive the fee of 500 francs, a good amount at the time. Once the design had been approved by the client, a full size design would be produced for the poster at a size of 1x1.4m, an old French paper standard known as the Double Grand Aigle. Cappiello would also be responsible for ensuring the successful transfer of the design onto lithographic stone ready for printing.

Between 1901 and 1914, he created several hundred posters in a style that revolutionised the art of poster design. During World War I, Cappiello worked as an interpreter in Italy. After the First World War Cappiello returned to producing posters. His first meeting with Devambez in 1918 marked the start of a long discussion: three years later he signed an exclusive contract with the Paris publisher for whom he designed now famous icons: such as Kub, Campari, Paraluie Revel, Pirelli, Chocolat Klaus and Poudre de Luzy, and the famous entertainer Mistinguett at the Casino de Paris. Unlike Vercasson, Devambez did not have its own print house, and had the posters printed at a number of large printers. The agency concentrated on finding new clients from across Europe, and successfully spread Cappiello’s celebrated works across the continent. He remained with the agency until 1936..

  • 09/11/17--05:53: Leonetto Cappiello - part 2
  • 1902c Self-Portrait

Leonetto Cappiello (1875 – 1942) was an Italian/French poster artist and painter, who mainly lived and worked in Paris. He is now often called 'the father of modern advertising' because of his innovation in poster design. The early advertising poster was characterised by a painterly quality as evidenced by early poster artists Jules Chéret, Alfred Choubrac and Hugo D'Alesi. Cappiello, like other young artists, worked in way that was almost the opposite of his predecessors. He was the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters early norm.

For more information on Cappiello, and for earlier works. see part 1 also.

  • Leonetto Cappiello (1875 – 1942) was an Italian/French poster artist and painter, who mainly lived and worked in Paris.

For more information on Cappiello see part 1, and for earlier works see parts 1 - 4 also.

  • 09/27/17--06:50: John Bauer - part 1
  • 1908 John Bauer Self-Portrait
    watercolour on paper 18 x 19 cm
    Jönköping Country Museum, Sweden

John Albert Bauer (1882 – 1918) was a Swedish painter and illustrator. His work is concerned with landscape and mythology, but he also composed portraits. He is best known for his illustrations of early editions of Blandtomtar och troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls), an anthology of Swedish folklore and fairy tales.
Bauer was born and raised in Jönköping. At age sixteen he moved to Stockholm to study at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. While there he received his first commissions to illustrate stories in books and magazines, and met the artist Ester Ellqvist, whom he married in 1906. He travelled throughout Lappland, Germany and Italy early in his career, and these cultures deeply informed his work. He painted and illustrated in a romantic nationalistic style, in part influenced by the Italian Renaissance and Sami cultures. Most of his works are watercolours or prints in monochrome or muted colours; he also produced oil paintings and frescos. His illustrations and paintings broadened the understanding and appreciation of Swedish folklore, fairy tales and landscape.

When Bauer was 36, he, Ester and their son, Bengt, drowned in a shipwreck on Lake Vättern.
