1906c Zuleika
One of the young girls - Sargent's nieces and the daughters of friends - who were often part of his travelling party, posed for this watercolour wearing one of the costumes he purchased in the Middle east earlier in the year. The work's title refers to a woman featured in biblical and Arabic literature, who was often portrayed as enamoured of her handsome slave, Joseph:

This work (and others above) again employs costumes purchased by Sargent in the Middle East and carted in trunks to the Alps. All three male figures were modelled by Nicola d'Inverno, Sargent's manservant, a fact that reveals the contrivances underpinning these seemingly casual scenes:

“Mugs"

Sargent made hundreds of rapidly drawn charcoal sketches of society personalities, drawings he referred to as "mugs". He made these in response to a high demand for hos work, and not being able to satisfy all with oil paintings, satiated his sitters with quick charcoal drawings. These drawings are mostly of wealthy patrons, although sometimes he would make exceptions:

Sargent's palette, oil paints and brushes Harvard Art Museums - Fogg Museum, Cambridge MA
John Singer Sargent (1866 - 1925) was an American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocation of Edwardian era luxury. During his career he created approximately 900 oil paintings and more than 2000 watercolours, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine and Florida, amongst others.

This is part 23 of a 23-part post on the works of John Singer Sargent. For full biographical notes see part 1. For earlier works see parts 1 - 22 also.

1922 General Officers of World War I
National Portrait Gallery, London: “Sargent, who initially declined the commission, began work on the military group portrait on his return from America in August 1920. He found the commission particularly difficult, writing to Sir James Guthrie (who was working on the politicians portrait) in Sepember of that year: ‘But I am merely collecting material and have not yet evolved any scheme of the picture as a whole. I am handicapped by the idea that they never could have been altogether in any sort of interesting background and reduced to painting them all standing up in a vacuum’. Certainly this painting does not have the characteristic brilliance of Sargent’s other work and was described by a former director of the National Portrait Gallery as ‘Still Life with Boots’.

All of Sargent’s murals are to be found in the Boston/Cambridge, Massachusetts area. They are in the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts - Boston, and Harvard University’s Widener Library. Sargent’s largest scale works are the mural decorations that grace the Boston Public Library depicting the history of religion and the gods of polytheism. They were attached to the walls of the library by means of marouflage (using an adhesive that hardens as it dries such as plaster or cement). He worked on the cycle for almost thirty years but never completed the final mural. The murals were restored in 2003-04.

Mabel Dwight - part 1

1932 Self-Portrait lithograph on stone 26.9 x 21 cm Edition of 50 printed by George Miller
Though Mabel Dwight studied art in her youth, she emerged relatively late in life as a noted satirist of contemporary American life, particularly focused on New York, where she lived.

Mabel Jacque Williamson (1876 – 1955) was born in Cincinatti, Ohio. She spent her childhood in New Orleans and California and studied at San Francisco’s Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (now San Francisco Art Institute), after which she travelled extensively in France, Italy, India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Egypt and Java. In 1903 she settled in Greenwich Village, New York, enclave of bohemian artists and writers at the time. She married social realist painter and printmaker Eugene Higgins (1874 – 1958) in 1906 and spent much of the next decade promoting her Higgins’ art, but they separated in 1917 and divorced in 1921. Higgins is these days grouped with the famous New York “Ashcan School” style of works.

In  1918 Mabel became the secretary of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s newly established Studio Club, promoting contemporary American art, and evolving into the present-day Whitney Museum of American Art. Following her divorce from Higgins in 1921 Mabel adopted the surname Dwight, for unknown reasons.

1898 Sketch Club Catalogue by Mabel (Williamson) Dwight

In 1926 aged fifty-two Mabel Dwight visited Paris, where she discovered her true medium, lithography. Her first lithographs were produced at Atelier Duchâtel, and her first solo exhibition of prints and drawings took place in 1928 at the Weyhe Gallery, New York – a gallery specializing in prints, founded by Erhard Wehe (in 1919) and managed by Carl Zigrosser (see 1930 lithograph below). It was through this medium – producing 111 limted edition lithographic prints – that she was able to express her vision of the comedie humaine, recording the everyday life and foibles of her fellow New Yorkers.

During the Depression her work became more serious and politically charged, creating anti-fascist images and participating in the New Deal’’s Federal Art Project, for which she produced  twenty-five lithographs highlighting urban social and political issues. By this time she was finding success amongst both collectors and museums. Unfortunately her artistic ability declined off after 1941 due to failing health. She spent her last years writing her autobiography, which was never published.

Carl Larsson - Part 1

Carl Larsson in 1882
Carl Larsson (1853 – 1919) was born in 1853 in Stockholm, Sweden, to an extremely poor family, though his artistic talent emerged relatively early in his life. At the age of thirteen, his teacher at the school for the poor persuaded him to apply for enrolment at Principskolan, the preparatory department of the Swedish Royal Academy. During his first years there, he felt socially inferior, confused and shy. In 1869, aged sixteen, he was promoted to the “Antique School” of the same academy. There he gained confidence, and even became a central figure in student life; he also earned his first medal in life drawing.

After the Academy Larsson worked as a caricaturist for the humorous paper Kaspar, and as a graphic artist for the newspaper Ny Ilustrerad Tidning. His annual income was sufficient to allow him to help his parents financially. After several years working as an illustrator of books, magazines and newspapers, he moved to Paris in 1877, where he spent several frustrating years as a hardworking artist, but without any success. Larsson was not eager to establish contact with the French progressive Impressionists; instead, along with other Swedish artists, he cut himself off from the radical movement of change.

After two summers in Barbizon (in central France), the refuge of the plein-air painters, he settled down with his Swedish painter colleagues in 1882 in Grez-sur Loing, outside Paris, at a Scandinavian artists’ colony. It was there that he met the artist Karin Bergöö, who soon became his wife. This was to be a turning point in Larsson’s life. In Grez, he painted some of his most important works, now using watercolour, and very different from the oil painting technique he had previously employed.

Karin Bergöö, artist and wife of Carl Larsson
Carl and Karin had eight children and his family became Larsson’s favourite models. Many of the domestic interiors depicted were the work of Karin, who also worked as an interior designer. Their eight children were Suzanne (1884), Ulf (1887 – died aged 18), Pontus (1888), Lisbeth (1891), Brita (1893), Mats (1894 – died aged 2 months), Kersti (1896) and Esbjörn (1900). In 1888 the family was given a small house in Sundborn, Sweden by Karin’s father Adolf Bergöö. Carl and Karin decorated and furnished “Little Hyttnäs” according to their particular artistic taste. Through Larsson’s paintings and books “Little Hyttnäs” has become one of the most famous artist’s homes in the world. The house is now maintained by Larsson’s descendants and is open to tourists during the summer months.

Larsson’s popularity increased considerably with the development of colour reproduction technology in the 1890s. Swedish publisher Bonnier published “A Home” (1894) written and illustrated by Larsson containing full colour reproductions of his  paintings of domestic life in “Little Hyttnäs”. However, the print runs of these rather expensive albums did not come close to that produced in 1909 by German publisher Karl Robert Langewiesche, entitled “The House in the Sun”. It became one of the German publishing industry’s best-sellers of the year, selling 40,000 copies in three months. By 2001 the book had enjoyed more than 40 print runs.

Larsson considered his monumental works, such as frescoes in schools, museums and other public buildings, to be his most important works. His last monumental work, Midvinterblot (Midwinter Sacrifice), a 6 x 14 metre oil on canvas completed in 1915, had been commissioned for a wall in the National Museum in Stockholm (which already had several of his works adorning its walls). However, on completion it was rejected by the governing board of the museum. Decades later, the painting was purchased and placed in the National Museum.

In his memoirs, published after his death, Larsson declared his bitterness and disappointment over the rejection of the painting he himself considered to be his greatest achievement: “The fate of Midvinterblot broke me! This I admit with dark anger. And still, it was probably the best thing that could have happened, because my intuition tells – once again! – that this painting, with all its weaknesses, will one day, when I am gone, be honoured with a far better placement.”

Larsson admitted however, in the same memoirs, that the pictures of his family and home “became the most immediate and lasting part of my life’s work. For these pictures are of course a very genuine expression of my personality, of my deepest feelings, of all my limitless love for my wife and children.”
